The final of the Italian Grand Prix behind a safety car attracted huge criticism in the first minutes after the race. Red Bull commented that they did not want to take the victory on the Monza track like that.
“We don’t want to win behind the safety car,” said Christian Horner. “We’ve talked about it. We have discussed it for many, many years. The final must be a race. And there was enough time for them to start the race again.”
“Our car was faster, but we want to win on the track and we share the fans’ disappointment because it would have been a great finish. They chose the wrong car – George Russell, but there was still plenty of time for a restart. We need to discuss what happened and see the details. But there was time to return to the race. What happened is against the principles we have discussed.”
Horner added that, in his opinion, the fans lost the most today.
Helmut Marko said in the first televised interviews after the finish that he thought the decision to finish behind the safety car was wrong.
Max Verstappen commented that he had been waiting for a victory at Monza for a very long time
“We had an excellent race. We were fastest with all possible tires. Attrition level was low. My car was going great and I had no problem controlling the pace until almost the end. Unfortunately a safety car came out shortly before the finish and there was no restart. But overall, Sunday was a good day for us,” said the Dutch Red Bull driver.
“My start was good. I got through the first turn without any problems and quickly got into a rhythm. Over the entire race distance, the tire handling is great. I won for the first time at Monza. I’ve been waiting for this victory for a long time, but I was finally able to get on the top step of this legendary podium,” added Verstappen.
