The forces of Azerbaijan occupied 10 square kilometers of the country’s territory, Armenia reported. This happened after another escalation along the border, the biggest since the end of the war in 2020.

Azerbaijan attacks along its entire border with Armenia. Russian military bases in Nagorno-Karabakh were also shelled earlier.

“The enemy occupied 40 sq. km of Armenian land in May last year and now has occupied another 10 sq. km,” Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan told lawmakers, asking Azerbaijan’s forces to “leave our territories.”

Armenia requested activation of Art. 4 of the collective security organization treaty, where Russia is the leading party. This article provides for the immediate dispatch of troops if a member country is attacked.

The Armenian demand was announced by Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, the “Arka” agency reported.

“Article 4 states that aggression against one member state is considered aggression against other states as well. We have turned to the CSTO for help and support, including military support to restore the territorial integrity of Armenia and ensure the withdrawal of Azerbaijani armed forces from the territory of Armenia”, noted the Prime Minister.

“By saying that Azerbaijan committed aggression against us, we mean that control over a certain territory was also established,” he added.

CSTO is a military union of former Soviet republics. It includes Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Russia. It was created in 1992 as a counterpoint to NATO after the Warsaw Pact collapsed.
