Real Madrid beat Leipzig 2-0 in a Champions League group stage match. Frederico Valverde was accurate and opened the scoring in the 80th minute. The second goal was scored by Marco Asensio in the 91st minute of the match.
Surprisingly, the first danger was in front of the Real Madrid goal, as early as the 5th minute, Nkunku was brought alone against the goalkeeper after a great pass through the middle. The Leipzig player shoots, but Courtois manages to deflect the shot into a corner. The execution of the corner kick did not lead to anything more serious in front of the goal of the “whites”.
In the following minutes, the possession of the ball passed under the control of Leipzig, who, however, had difficulty moving the ball against the pressing team of Real Madrid, as the main weapon of attack for the guests was long passes and counterattacks. Again, Nkunku found himself in a clear position in the 11th minute as he was brought down in the Los Blancos penalty area and failed to shoot on target. Despite the player’s claims for a penalty, the referee let the game continue. And Real responded with a quick attack that was led by Vinicius Junior, but ended in ingloriously.
Rodrigo seriously troubled the Leipzig defense in the 15th minute when he burst down the left wing. He dealt with a football player of the guests and even shot, but the ball went wide of the goal.
Timo Werner found Emil Forsberg in the 21st minute after reaching the Los Blancos penalty area. The Swede shot with his first touch, from the edge of the penalty area, but the ball flew over the goal. It was Timo Werner who found Nkunku in the 28th minute with a wonderful through ball. The Frenchman was unable to get a good shot in as Thibaut Courtois reacted quickly and threw himself at the footballer’s feet.
Perhaps Leipzig’s biggest chance came in the 35th minute when Werner received the ball on the left and found Nkunku with a sharp pass in the box. Courtois failed to intervene and the Real defenders only watched the ball, but Nkunku was unable to reach the ball either, even when diving. If he had, it would surely have been a goal as the goal was empty.
Rüdiger burst in behind the Leipzig defense in the 39th minute, following a good cross from Rodrigo towards the far post. However, Rüdiger was unable to fire a shot. In the 41st minute, Luka Modric received the ball, he tricked a Leipzig defender and managed to find a corridor for a shot, but the Croatian chose the ball to the goal.
In the first part, Real Madrid did not register a shot on the goal of the German team. The second half started with an even game, mostly in the center of the field. Werner came face-to-face with Courtois in the 50th minute, but his shot was saved, and seconds later he was adjudged to be offside. Real Madrid continued to struggle in attack but also in possession. Vinicius Junior tried several times to break through on his own, but this also did not bring success for the “whites”.
Alaba looked for a teammate with a dangerous cross in the 59th minute, but a Real player couldn’t get to the ball, which went to the far post. Rodrigo was also causing problems for the Leipzig defense and in the 61st minute he was stopped by a foul from Simakan. The direct free kick was 27 meters from the goal line, and the performance was precisely by Rodrigo, who, however, sent the ball over the goal.
Real Madrid seemed to gain control of the match and began to control the ball more, while Leipzig fell further back. “Los Blancos” continued to look for better opportunities, and in the 70th minute, the home team still did not have an accurate shot at the opponent’s goal.
A serious mix-up in the Leipzig half led to Real Madrid’s first real clean sheet after a ricochet sent the ball to the feet of Frederico Valverde, who had entered the German side’s penalty area but was unable to get a good hold on the ball. The ball went to Vinicius Juniro who had to shoot quickly but Gulacci was already there and blocked the shot from the young Real Madrid star. Thus, the two teams continued to play in a scoreless draw.
Vinicius Junior found Frederico Valverde in the 80th minute, and he took the lead, feinted a Leipzig player and fired home. His shot was accurate, and the goalkeeper of the visitors was unable to intervene – 1:0.
Leipzig did not give up, and in the 87th minute they even got into a good position and had a shot, which was blocked by Antonio Rüdiger. The ensuing corner didn’t cause any more problems for Courtois and company.
Real Madrid made the final 2:0 in extra time of the match, and more precisely in the 91st minute, when Toni Kroos crossed from a direct free kick, and Marco Asensio reached the ball and sent it into Leipzig’s goal – 2:0.
