In Bulgaria, cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death and disability. Unfortunately, statistics show that recently the lower age limit is falling and more and more cases of children with high blood pressure have been registered. Since the initial symptoms of hypertension are quite mild, the disease is often diagnosed at an advanced stage, when severe and permanent damage has been done to the body.
High blood pressure is the leading risk factor contributing to premature death, responsible for almost 10 million deaths and over 200 million person-years of disability. Stress, poor diet and lack of exercise are the main factors in raising blood pressure. Therefore, only a healthy lifestyle can prevent or delay the disease and also reduce the cardiovascular risk. Medicines must be taken daily and at normal blood pressure, and doctors do not rely only on them, experts advise.
The initial form of hypertension is a challenge for both doctor and patient because treatment can be affected by non-drug means. If a patient loses about 10 kg of weight, he can lower his blood pressure by 5 mmHg. The second point is the reduction of salt, and the third is daily physical activity. At least 30 minutes a day of running or some equivalent effort is needed. The fourth factor in controlling hypertension is limiting alcohol to normal limits.
