Erling Holland’s goal against Borussia (Dortmund) was something truly impressive, but also a scenario that many imagined before the match started.

The Manchester City striker is the next big player in the Champions League to sign against his former team.

Such a turn of events could have been predicted and is not unusual in recent years at Europe’s biggest club tournament.

The last such case was in the 2019/20 season, when Kingsley Coman scored for his current team Bayern (Munich) against PSG in the final of the tournament. In the same season, Angel Di Maria scored twice for the Parisians against his former teammates from Real Madrid.

We can’t forget the match between Barcelona and Liverpool in the 2018/19 season, when Luis Suarez scored against his former club, but was then eliminated from the competition in the second leg.

There was such a case with a Merseyside player – Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian scored twice for his current club against former side Roma in 2017/18.

The previous cases take us back to the 2014/15 season, when David Luiz scored for PSG against Chelsea and Alvaro Morata was on target for Juventus against Real (Madrid). A year earlier, Fernando Torres with the Chelsea team scored against his native Atlético (Madrid).
