Manchester United recorded their first Europa League win of the current season after winning 2-0 away to Sheriff Tiraspol. Jaden Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo became heroes for the visitors, and for the latter it was the first goal in the current season. A curious fact is that the hosts started with 9 Africans in the starting lineup, but without a single Moldovan.
In this way, the “red devils” climbed to the second position in the provisional ranking, while the Moldovan team fell one place down – third. Both teams have three points each. The leader in Group E is Real Sociedad with 6 points, while Omonia completes the group without a point after losing to the Spanish team 1:2.
The English colossus controlled the initiative throughout, with the exception of the first twenty minutes of the second half, in which the “Sheriffs” possessed the ball for a greater part. The Ten Haag alumni had one goal less than the opponent in the first 30 minutes – 2, but they managed to open the score in the 17th minute. Sancho then took advantage of a wonderful pass from Eriksen and fired between the two to make the difference.
After six minutes, Atiemuen responded for the hosts with a powerful strike from distance, which, however, went just wide of the left side post. It was one of the most dangerous situations for the hosts, who with a little more luck would have equalized.
In the 36th minute, Kpozo committed a foul in the penalty area and Cristiano Ronaldo managed to send the ball into the net to double the lead for his teammates. He had claims at an earlier stage in the match for a penalty, but it was not awarded.
Bruno Fernandes could then have ended the match for good with a third goal in the 48th minute, but Kovacs responded.
Until the end of the meeting, the two teams exchanged a bunch of attacks, but the most dangerous situation for the hosts came only in the last five minutes of the meeting, when they received the right to perform a direct free kick, but the attempt turned out to be unsuccessful.
Goal! In the 17th minute, the “red devils” took advantage of the individual skills of Sancho, who mastered Eriksen’s pass on the edge of the penalty area and scored in the opponent’s goal with a shot between two! 0:1!
After six minutes, Atiemuen responded for the hosts with a powerful strike from distance, which, however, went just wide of the left side post. Had he been a touch more accurate, however, it would have turned into a goal as De Gea’s reaction was delayed.
The visitors dominated possession in the first half hour, but the Moldovan side took advantage of the colossus’ mistakes and created 3 scoring chances, while Eric ten Haag’s alumni had one less. Shortly before the opener, Ronaldo had appeals for a penalty which were disallowed.
In the 36th minute, Sancho was about to double the difference for the visitors, but the captain Radelic managed to clear from the goal line at the last possible moment and thus prevented the goal!
Seconds later, Kpozo brought down an opposing player in the penalty area, and the referee did not hesitate to award a penalty!
Goal! Cristiano Ronaldo took the performance from the penalty spot and scored his first goal since the beginning of the season with a shot in the center of the goal! 0:2!
The initiative in the first 20 minutes of the second half belonged to the home team, who had possession of the ball 58% of the time. Meanwhile, they managed to create a goal situation, while the “red devils” – with one more.
It was the graduates of Ten Haag who came closest to scoring in the 48th minute. Fernandes then found himself in a shooting position, but his shot was parried by Koval.
