Russia will support a possible decision by the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People’s Republics (DPR and LPR), as well as Ukraine’s Zaporozhye and Kherson regions, to join the federation. This was stated today by the Speaker of the State Duma, Vyacheslav Volodin, TASS reported.

“Dear compatriots, make your choice freely. Do not be afraid of anything. If you decide to join the Russian Federation – we will support you”Volodin wrote on Telegram.

Commenting on EU criticism of referendums on the issue starting today, Volodin said: “For eight years, the European Union did not notice the genocide of the people of Donbas, did not think about their security”. Therefore, the European representatives “cannot understand the suffering of the people and are not the ones who can give advice on what to do”.

Denis Pushilin, the head of the separatist DNR, called the referendum “an important historical day,” the Associated Press reported. Valentina Matviyenko, Speaker of the Upper House of the Russian Parliament, said that residents of the occupied areas vote for “life or death” in referendums.

In his traditional evening address, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, for his part, mentioned the referendums quite succinctly, which he described as a farce.

During the first four days, representatives of Russian-appointed election authorities will deliver ballot boxes to people’s homes and set up makeshift polling stations near residential buildings. Tuesday will be the only day on which voting will take place in real polling stations.

Electoral sections in Russia also opened today, where refugees from the occupied regions will be able to cast their votes.

Referendum voting began amid ongoing fighting in Ukraine, the Associated Press notes. Russian and Ukrainian troops fire at each other, with both sides stubbornly refusing to cede territory to the enemy.

This morning, pro-Russian authorities in the Zaporozhye region reported a loud explosion in the center of Melitopol, a city Moscow captured at the start of the war. Their representative, Vladimir Rogov, did not give details about the reasons and whether there were material damages or casualties.

The Moscow-backed authorities in the Donetsk region accused the Ukrainian forces of shelling Donetsk and the neighboring town of Yasinovataya, BTA reported.

The Ukrainian authorities, for their part, announced new Russian shelling in various parts of Ukraine. Vitaly Kim, the regional governor of Nikolaev, reported explosions in the area of the city in the early hours of today.

Valentin Reznichenko, governor of the Dnipropetrovsk region, reported Russian shelling this morning on Nikopol, a city located across from the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant on the other side of the Dnieper River.
