A former Wisconsin teacher has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for repeatedly sexually assaulting a teenager in the basement of a private Baptist school.
Ann Nelson-Koch, 75, was originally sentenced to a maximum of 624 years behind bars.
But on Oct. 27, Monroe County Circuit Court Judge Richard Radcliffe handed down the 10-year sentence to Nelson-Koch, Monroe County District Attorney Kevin Croninger said.
After her release from prison, she will be under the supervision of the Wisconsin Department of Corrections for 15 years.
In April 2022, authorities accused Nelson-Koch of forcing a 14-year-old student to have sex repeatedly during school hours during the 2016-2017 school year, the Tomah Police Department said in a statement.
At the time of the attacks, Nelson-Koch was working at Thomas Baptist Academy.
In August, a jury found her guilty of 25 counts of child sexual assault, child enticement, genital exposure, private exposure and intimidation.
According to a criminal complaint obtained by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, Nelson-Koch sexually assaulted a 14-year-old boy multiple times during the 2016-17 school year at the school.
According to the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel, the assaults stopped when Nelson-Koch left the school, the complaint said.
In determining the sentence, the judge said Nelson-Koch’s impact on the victim and her family was an “aggravating factor,” according to a news release from the Tomah Police Department.
However, he said Nelson-Koch’s alleged character was a mitigating factor, describing the convicted felon as “kind,” “selfless,” “giving” and “hardworking,” the police department said in a statement.
The judge said a person with Nelson-Koch’s educational and work history “is not someone who would normally end up in the criminal justice system facing 600 years in prison,” the police department said in a statement.
Assistant District Attorney Sarah Skiles, who is prosecuting the case, strongly disagrees.
The district attorney “attacked Nelson-Koch’s lack of remorse or remorse, calling Nelson-Koch’s masquerade of virtue ‘a calculated attempt to cover up his predatory tendencies,'” the police department said in a statement.
“Skiles stated that the damage Nelson-Koch caused by her horrific actions cannot be repaired, but can be compensated through a just sentence,” the police department said in a statement.
Skiles argued that the long sentence was necessary to “ensure that the seriousness of the sexual assault of a child at school and the pain suffered by the victim is not minimized,” the release added.
During the sentencing hearing, the victim’s father said his son went public to make sure Nelson-Koch couldn’t attack other children.
He asked the judge for a sentence that would keep Nelson-Koch in prison for the rest of her life.
Judge Radcliffe subsequently imposed a 10-year sentence, followed by 15 years of supervision. After her felony conviction, Nelson-Koch was released to await sentencing, despite the prosecution’s objection. But on October 27, the former teacher was detained after the sentencing to begin serving her sentence, Darrick wrote.
After the sentencing, Prosecutor Skiles praised the young victim, saying: “I applaud him for his courage. Without his courage, Nelson-Koch would still be in society.”
According to Nelson-Koch’s Facebook page, as of August 14, 2017, she was “in a relationship”.
She graduated from New Hampton High School in New Hampton, Iowa in 1966, and her page says she was a medical assistant at Purdue Global.
She started working at Thomas Baptist Academy on February 1, 2016, according to her Facebook page.
