Croatian Defense Minister Mario Banozic was fired today after causing an accident that killed one person. Banožić himself was seriously injured in the accident, BTA reported.
Croatian authorities said the minister was overtaking a truck in bad weather when he collided with a van in the oncoming lane. The driver of the van died as a result of the crash and Banozic was hospitalized with serious injuries.
Prime Minister Andrej Plenković announced that he had removed Minister Banojić from office.
The accident happened around 6 am this morning in the outskirts of Vinkovtsi, where the minister lives. Banozic, 44, was driving his personal car and traveling alone. According to the local information site “Index” he was going hunting.
Government spokesman Marko Milić expressed his condolences to the family of the dead man.
The deputy prosecutor of the eastern city of Vukovar, Biljana Luburic, said samples of Banozic’s blood and urine had been taken.
According to a crash report, Banozic overtook another vehicle “without ensuring that it could be done safely and without considering the weather conditions.”
Mario Banozic suffered head and brain injuries, as well as numerous bodily injuries. He remains under observation in a hospital in Osijek, according to doctors, his life is out of danger.
