The Bulgarian North-West region is in first place in the EU and Europe in terms of the number of victims of road accidents for 2021, according to data presented today by Eurostat. According to the data, in this part of our country there were 133 victims per one million population in a year.
The study also covers Turkey, Iceland, Norway, Serbia and North Macedonia, which are not part of the EU. If the data from the overseas French region of Guadeloupe are also taken into account, where the victims were 159 per one million, the Bulgarian Northwest occupies the second place.
The study reports that there were 19,917 road accident victims in the EU in 2021, which equates to 45 deaths per one million population. In 24 EU regions, the victims were over 80 per million, with six of these regions in Romania, three each in Bulgaria and Greece, two each in Croatia, Poland and Portugal, and the remaining six shared between Belgium and Italy , the announcement stated.
Accidents with casualties occur most often in agricultural areas, not in urban environments. The places where no serious accidents were reported were in the north of Italy and in the south of Spain. Brussels, Vienna, Stockholm and Bremen are the EU cities with the fewest road accident victims, the data show.
