Lavrov: The West is dangerously balancing on the brink of a direct military confrontation between nuclear powers

Western countries are precariously poised on the brink of a direct military confrontation between nuclear powers that is fraught with catastrophic consequences. This was stated in a video address by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov to the participants in the Moscow Conference on Non-Proliferation of Arms, Russian media reported.

“Today, the US and its satellites in NATO are still obsessed with the idea of ​​inflicting a ‘strategic defeat’ on Russia and are ready to continue holding our country down to the ‘last Ukrainian,’ balancing dangerously on the brink of a direct military confrontation between nuclear powers that is fraught with catastrophic consequences,” Lavrov noted.

According to the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry, the fact that the “troika” of Western nuclear states are among the key sponsors of the criminal Kyiv regime and the main initiators of various provocative steps causes particular concern.

“We see these as serious strategic risks leading to an increase in the level of nuclear danger,” he added.

“We are convinced that in order to prevent further deterioration of the global situation, to maintain long-term stability and to formulate a realistic disarmament program, joint efforts are needed to build a renewed international security architecture based on the principles of multilateralism, equality and indivisibility”, emphasized the minister. Only in this way, he said, “is it possible to reduce the level of interstate conflict and ensure real progress in the field of arms control.”

The collective West, led by the United States, is promoting “outright fraudulent schemes” to achieve superiority through new limits on its opponents’ nuclear arsenals, the foreign secretary said.

“The collective West, led by the United States, cynically combines the purposeful destruction of balanced and equal agreements that hindered Washington with the promotion of openly fraudulent schemes that create advantages for the American side, the goal is obvious – to achieve unilateral military superiority new restrictions on the nuclear arsenals of opponents while consolidating the general superiority of the West in the field of non-nuclear potential,” said the address of the head of the Russian Foreign Ministry.

The minister also emphasized that in pursuit of decisive military superiority, Washington and its allies are expanding the network of alliances directed against third countries.

“They are actively implementing a number of extremely destabilizing military-technical programs. Among them is the construction of a global missile defense system combined with the accumulation of high-precision weapons to carry out the tasks of neutralizing and decapitating “global strikes”, basing the US nuclear potential in Europe and its destabilizing development within the framework of “joint nuclear missions of NATO”, as well as preparations for the deployment of weapons in space and ground-based missiles with a medium and shorter range in various regions of the world,” Lavrov said.

He noted that the Russian side is also “deeply disturbed” by the formation of the AUKUS partnership between the US, Great Britain and Australia, which is “increasingly taking on the features of a military bloc.”

“This includes increasing military spending by NATO countries and allies of the United States and plans to increase Britain’s nuclear potential,” Lavrov said.
