Tsunami engulfs Istanbul after 7.5 earthquake in Marmorno…

--

Renowned Turkish seismologist Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan yesterday made a dramatic statement regarding a possible tsunami that could be created by a major earthquake in the regions around the Marmara, Mediterranean, Aegean and even the Black Sea.

In the Sea of Marmara, where the big Istanbul earthquake is expected, an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 will create powerful waves that will reach the shore in a very short time. According to Ercan, the danger is greater in the narrow bays along the 16 million city.

The geophysical engineer Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan gave information about the size of the tsunami that may occur after the earthquake expected on the Turkish coast. The professor shared a series of posts on his X social network account. There he also explained how long it would take for the tsunami to reach the coasts of the Marmara, Black, Aegean and Mediterranean seas after the earthquake.

Ercan said that an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.5 on the Richter scale in the Sea of Marmara region, which includes the metropolis of Istanbul, where it is expected a large earthquake, can create waves of 1 to 2.5 meters, and the height of the wave escalation can reach up to 5 meters.

According to Ercan, tsunami waves can travel from 50 to 300 meters inland and to reach shore within 4 to 20 minutes after the earthquake.

The professor also added a forecast for the Aegean and Mediterranean regions: An earthquake caused by faults there could cause waves of 1 to 3.5 meters, and the height of the wave escalation can reach 5.5 meters in places. Time for waves that have the potential to move 100 to 2500 meters inland to reach shore is 5 to 30 minutes.

The Black Sea will be least affected due to its remoteness from seismic activity, while the faults in the Sea of Marmara will have the most tangible effect with a vertical component in the 1-5 m range of the wave. The tsunami is expected to reach the coast in 4 to 20 minutes after the earthquake.

In Istanbul, they are preparing for this disaster, as they have marked the evacuation places with special tsunami warning signs in the coastal areas.

The Department of Earthquake Risk Management and Urban Environment Improvement of Istanbul Municipality has started implementing the Tsunami Action Plan. Warning signs have been placed along the shores of the Sea of Marmara in 17 districts. In total, over 100 signs have been placed in the areas of Silivri, Beylikdüzü, Avçlar, Küçükçekmece, Bakırköy, Zeytinburnu, Fatih, Beyoğlu, Beşiktaş, Üsküdar, Kadıköy, Maltepe, Kartal, Pendık, Tuzla and the Prince’s Islands.

The purpose of the measures is to minimize the losses caused by a possible tsunami and to determine the precautions to be taken to ensure that important critical structures on the coast of the Marmara Sea are not affected or at least affected by the tsunami.
