The management of Plovdiv Airport participated in the prestigious international forum Routes Europe in the city of Aarhus, Denmark. The event brings together representatives of the aviation industry from all over Europe and provides an incredible opportunity to directly negotiate new air routes within and even beyond the Old Continent. Plovdiv Airport managed to hold extremely successful meetings within the first two days of the exhibition.

The possibilities of opening a direct route Vienna – Plovdiv were discussed with representatives of Wizz Air. Among the other extremely important meetings was the one with the Transavia airline, where the possibility of restoring air connectivity between Brussels and Plovdiv was discussed. Also, at a meeting with VOLOTEA, it became clear that the option of creating an air line connecting Marseille with Plovdiv is possible.

This month, the Bulgarian community in Austria announced the opening of direct flights from Vienna to Plovdiv, participating in a petition for this purpose.

“The success of a direct airline between the two cities is certain. On the one hand, the Bulgarian community living in Austria needs it. On the other hand, it is the fast way to attract more tourists from different parts of Europe and the world, because Vienna Airport is one of the most popular and convenient for transfers in Europe”, commented the executive director of Plovdiv Airport Doychin Angelov.

The meeting in Austria was similar to those in Spain, where the possibilities for flights from the Spanish city of Malaga to Plovdiv were discussed.

Negotiations for an airline there are at a very advanced stage. Currently, there are 10 weekly flights from London to Plovdiv with two different airlines. The planes are almost 100% full in both directions. Thanks to the efforts of the Plovdiv Airport Development Fund, there is also a regular seasonal airline to Manchester, and from November, a regular airline to Birmingham, the second largest English city, will be opened.

Currently, 11 municipalities are members of the Fund – Plovdiv, Smolyan, Chepelare, Rodopi, Sopot, Kaloyanovo, Kuklen, Hisarya, Saedinenie, Sadovo, Brezovo and three legal entities, private companies – Pamporovo JSC, Grand Hotel Plovdiv, SNC Fund Fenix. The Bulgarian communities in France, Spain, Italy, Germany, Norway, Belgium and Cyprus are also exploring the possibilities of supporting new airlines.

“The potential for increasing the possible destinations would be much greater if the remaining 46 municipalities from the South Central region, as well as branch organizations such as hoteliers, restaurateurs and transport businesses, joined the Fund. For this purpose, all other active companies need to realize that the improvement of the business environment will also improve their economic activity”, Doichin Angelov added.
