The Russian army has taken control of the center of the small village of Ocheretino in Donetsk region, which was home to 3,600 people before the full-scale invasion.

As reported by the military observer of the German edition Bild Julian Röpke, after fierce fighting that lasted for months, units of the Russian armed forces managed to enter the populated area in the last 48 hours without actually meeting any serious resistance.

“The reason for the success of the Russian army is that dozens of soldiers from the Ukrainian armed forces, who were holding the defense in this area, were forced to retreat,” notes Röpke.

The village of Ocheretino is located on a strategically important railway line that leads to the last cities of the Donetsk region that remain under the control of the Ukrainian armed forces. It is not yet clear how the Ukrainian army intends to stop the advance of the Russian army.

The publication, citing Ukrainian servicemen and analysts, said the Russian breakthrough was made possible after the 115th Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces unexpectedly “left its positions.”
