Members of the UN Security Council did not adopt a draft resolution on the non-deployment of nuclear weapons in outer space.
The resolution was blocked by Russia, which used its veto, and China abstained. 13 countries supported the project.
Washington believes that the reason for Russia’s veto on the draft resolution prepared by the US and Japan on the non-deployment of nuclear weapons in space is that Moscow is actually developing a new satellite capable of carrying a nuclear charge.
“Russia, according to the United States, is developing a new satellite, capable of carrying a device with nuclear capabilities,” Sullivan said in a statement released by the White House.
According to Russia’s veto requests, the ban should cover conventional weapons. The Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN, Vasily Nebenzya, said: “It is extremely important that neither during today’s meeting nor earlier, the authors of the project were able to answer the question why exactly our proposal does not suit them: to add to the draft resolution a ban not deploy any weapons in space at all.
