The highest court of New York overturned the conviction of the Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein on sexual assault charges and ordered a new trial.

In their decision, the judges cited errors in the way the trial was conducted, including the admission of the testimony of women who were not part of the charges against him. “The determination is annulled and a new trial is ordered,” wrote the judges, quoted by AFP.
In February 2020, Weinstein, 72, was found guilty by a court in New York for rape and sexual assaultand was later sentenced to 23 years in prison.

He was subsequently found guilty and sentenced by a court in Los Angeles on another 16 years in prison for raping a woman in a hotel room in Beverly Hills.
In 2017, bombshell allegations erupted against the Oscar-winning producer, setting off the the MeToo movement and paved the way for hundreds of women to fight against sexual violence in the workplace.
“With today’s decision, this court continues to thwart the steady gains that sexual assault survivors have fought for in our criminal justice system,” said one of the dissenting judges.
