New York’s highest court overturns Harvey Weinstein’s 2020 rape conviction., reports the Associated Press. The judge in the landmark trial was found to have harmed the movie mogul by allowing the women to testify on charges that were not part of the case.

The court indicated that the remedy for the mistakes made is to have a new trial.

Weinstein, 72, is serving a 23-year sentence in a New York prison after being convicted of sex crimes, including rape.

Attorney Douglas H. Wigdor, who represented eight of Harvey Weinstein’s accusers, including two witnesses in the New York criminal trial, called the decision “a major step backwards in the pursuit of accountability for acts of sexual violence.”

The overturning of Weinstein’s conviction is the second major setback for the MeToo movement in the past two years, after The US Supreme Court declined to hear an appeal of a Pennsylvania court’s decision to throw out Bill Cosby’s conviction for sexual assault.

New sentence of 16 years for Harvey Weinstein
