Well One of the two operating reactors at the Zaporizhia NPP was shut down due to Russian shelling. This was stated by the Ukrainian operator “Energoatom”, quoted by Reuters.

“Due to another mortar shelling by Russian forces against the Zaporizhia NPP, the emergency protection system was activated and the fifth unit was shut down,” wrote “Energoatom” in Telegram.

The IAEA mission arrived in Zaporizhia

The operator added that unit six continues to operate and supply the nuclear plant with electricity for its own needs.

Earlier, the Ukrainian authorities accused Russia of carrying out artillery strikes on Energodar, the city where the Zaporizhia NPP is located, on the day when a mission of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is expected to arrive there, France Press reported.

Kremlin: Put pressure on Ukraine for the Zaporizhzhia NPP

“The Russians are firing artillery on the route the IAEA mission is supposed to take to the Russian-occupied Zaporizhzhia headquarters,” wrote the exiled mayor of the city, Dmytro Orlov, on Telegram. According to him, the delegation cannot “continue its journey” to the NPP “for security reasons”.

The IAEA mission is expected to visit today the headquarters – the largest in Europe, which is under Russian occupation. The facility has recently been shelled more than once, raising fears of a nuclear disaster.

“We urge Russia to stop its provocations and give the IAEA access to this Ukrainian nuclear installation,” Orlov continued.

Since early morning, the Russians have been “firing at Energodar with howitzers, with automatic weapons and shelling it with rockets,” he made a separate accusation on Telegram earlier today, posting photos of damaged buildings and plumes of black smoke.

Shelling over Energodar near Zaporizhzhia NPP

Yesterday, the Ukrainians already accused the Russians, who control Energodar and the plant, of shelling the city with the intention of pinning the blame on Ukrainian forces.

Meanwhile, Russia’s Defense Ministry said a Ukrainian “sabotage group” it said had docked near the Russian-controlled Zaporozhye nuclear power plant was being destroyed by helicopters, Reuters reported, citing Russia’s Interfax news agency.

According to information from the ministry, the group carried out the attack with two vessels that had already been sunk, the state agency RIA Novosti reported.

A Reuters reporter based near the headquarters in the Russian-controlled city of Energodar reported increased military activity, including troop movements and helicopter flyovers.

He added that a residential building had been hit by shelling, forcing people to hide in basements.
