The authoritarian leader of Russia’s North Caucasus region of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, has abandoned his recent call for possible resignation. He wrote on Telegram late on Monday that the statement he made two days earlier about his possible resignation was “to check your opinion”, reports svobodnaevropa.bg.

On Saturday, the Chechen leader said he deserved an “indefinite and long” break from his post and it was time to step down. His words sparked speculation whether it was a serious decision or whether Kadyrov was seeking some favor from the Kremlin.

Kadyrov wrote on Monday that he had learned that an unnamed Russian politician had been a regional leader for 27 years, so he “decided to beat this record”.

The leader is 45 and has ruled Chechnya since 2007. He is currently the longest-serving leader of a Russian region. Russian and international human rights groups have for years accused him of gross human rights abuses in the territory, including kidnappings, torture, extrajudicial killings, including killings of his opponents living abroad, and persecution of the LGBT community.

Kadyrov also played an important role in promoting Russia’s war in Ukraine and recruited people to fight alongside Russian troops.
