The 12th consecutive edition of the “Books for Garbage” campaign was launched today in Blagoevgrad. Its idea is that for every kilogram of plastic handed over for recycling, the participants will receive a book of their choice, and this year the “Letters that connect us” series, specially published for the initiative, was launched.

“The focus of the campaign itself is on the Cyrillic alphabet. For Blagoevgrad, we have prepared the first letters: “А”,”B”,”В”, since we are starting here. They are the titles of the new collection that our participants are collecting”, he explained to Radio Blagoevgrad one of the organizers of the campaign, Mariana Dobryanova, adding that the goal is clear: “Let’s pay attention, especially to children, that we have a planet that is our home and we must protect it, and recycling is one of the most direct ways to it”.

The name of the campaign is inspired by the Bulgarian fairy tale “Plums for Garbage”. Over the years, over 100 tons of plastic have been collected for recycling and books worth over BGN 1 million have been distributed.

“People are already more engaged and this is inevitable, because this is an obvious problem not only for Bulgaria, but for Europe in general, not to mention on a global scale. It is interesting that in the Pacific Ocean, for more than 20 years, it has been swimming an island the size of France of plastic waste, and if that’s not startling, I don’t know what is. Thank God, they are a different generation, and in them is our hope. You could say that children are the ones who make a difference things turn the game around and if, when we started, a child was 2-3 years old, now he is 12 and he brings his parents, which is a great pleasure for us,” said Marianna Dobryanova.
