Who are the invisible guardian angels of expensive technology?

--

Having a new computer with a large monitor and a network storage device is definitely very nice. Productivity increases significantly, and work quickly becomes a more desirable occupation. Ideally, the new equipment will serve us for years without problems.

Often when we buy new equipment, however, we don’t think about how to protect our investment in the longer term. And here we are not talking about theft or mechanical damage, but rather one of the invisible threats to any electronic device – the power supply. Even a peak in the current voltage can easily “kill” any modern electronics that use a much lower operating voltage than that of the mains. It’s even more frustrating when the loss isn’t physical, but virtual—when a sudden power outage can wipe out hours of work, ruin a valuable work file, or interrupt an important video call.

In this technological age, almost every problem has its easy solution. The described situations are no exception, because it is enough to have a suitable uninterruptible power supply (UPS). Although these types of products have one specific task and require almost no configuration, their choice is not so easy. This is so, on the one hand, because the power of the UPS (usually expressed in VA) must correspond to the consumption of the equipment it will power, and on the other hand, because each user has different requirements for the product – from aesthetic to practical.

To facilitate users in home and small offices, one of the leading brands in the market – Eaton – offers the 5E series. These are compact and stylish UPSs with power from 550 VA to 2200 VA, which can stand directly on the desk or be hidden somewhere under it thanks to their compact dimensions. The black housing is discreet and fits easily into any office interior. Only the power button (with light indication) and a USB port (type B as for a printer) are located on the front, which will be discussed in a moment. In fact, to start using the product, you just need to connect the UPS to the network and the appliances you want to protect and power to the sockets on the back panel. Their number can vary from two to four depending on the model.

And since we’ve talked about protection from the start, let’s clarify: in addition to providing backup power for your equipment, Eaton 5E UPSs also regulate the supply voltage so that it is always within the regulated limits. This saves you the need for a separate surge protector and generally extends the life of the equipment.

Regarding the time of autonomous operation, let’s take two models of the range – Eaton 5E 700VA and Eaton 5E 1200VA as an example. The smaller one is suitable for normal office and mini PCs, as well as NAS devices, routers, cameras and more. It can provide a run time of a standard PC for about 4-5 minutes. With the larger model, this time increases to about 8-12 minutes, but there you can connect an additional peripheral or a more powerful workstation.

The time has come to explain the purpose of the only, but quite important, extra of the Eaton 5E UPS – the presence of a USB port. With its help and in combination with Eaton’s free software, you can easily configure the device directly from the computer. Thus, you will be able to set when a signal is given to forcibly turn off the computer, so that information is not lost, for example. This is especially important if you have attached a NAS for data storage. So it will always turn off in the established order before a power failure occurs (when the battery runs out). You’ll also be able to monitor battery health.

The Eaton 5E models have two more serious advantages that you can’t tell at first glance: they are easy to service, which allows quick battery replacement when needed and extends their useful life, and they are also completely silent in versions up to 1200 VA due to the lack of on a cooling fan. You can even turn off the reminder alert sound through the software. If you’ve dealt with an older UPS that kicks into full power in stand-alone mode, you know how uncomfortable this loud noise can be. In a moment of panic when you want to save the files you’re working on, the last thing you want is the intrusive whirring of the UPS fan…

The Eaton 5E UPS can be purchased from most stores and retail chains for electronics, with the price for the smaller model being around BGN 140 and the larger model being around BGN 290 including VAT.
