The new Mercedes-AMG GT63 SE Performance has become the brand’s fastest model

--

The plug-in hybrid has a power of 816 horsepower, accelerates to 100 km/h in 2.8 seconds and develops a top speed of 320 km/h

The AMG sports division of Mercedes-Benz presented the fastest coupe in the brand’s range, which bears the long name Mercedes-AMG GT 63 SE Performance. Hidden under the hood is a 4.0-liter V8 biturbo gasoline engine mated to an AMG Speedshift MCT-9G 9-speed automatic transmission with a wet clutch instead of a torque converter. For the hybrid, this engine is set to produce a maximum output of 612 hp. and a maximum torque of 850 Nm, with another 14 hp. during startup are added by starter-generator.

On the rear axle there is an electric module that combines a synchronous electric motor with a power of 204 hp. and a torque of 320 Nm, a two-speed gearbox and a self-locking differential between the axles. The 4Matic+ all-wheel drive transmission has a traditional drive shaft. In normal hybrid driving mode, it transfers power from the internal combustion engine to the rear axle, while the electric motor assists only the rear wheels. But when driving in purely electric mode up to 130 km/h, the cardan can transmit torque in the opposite direction – from the electric motor to the front wheels, using the standard transfer case and central clutch.

The lithium-ion battery is located above the rear axle, operates at 400 volts, weighs 89 kg and has a modest capacity of 6.1 kWh, but boasts a high level of energy exchange. In nominal mode, it produces 70 kW, and in peak power it can reach 150 kW, but for no more than 10 seconds. An advanced liquid cooling system covering each of the 560 cells allows maintaining an operating temperature of around 45 degrees. The battery can be charged from an electrical outlet but only with alternating current and a power of up to 3.7 kW, with four recovery levels provided. The mileage in purely electric mode is only 13 km.

The total power of the E Performance hybrid electrified system is 816 hp, and the maximum torque is 1080 Nm. The hybrid’s weight has yet to be revealed, but it’s certainly capable of towing a 2,195kg trailer. To sprint from a standstill to 100 km/h, the hybrid coupe with a charged battery needs just 2.8 seconds, the best result among production AMG models.

Behind remains not only the hybrid SL with an achievement of 2.9 seconds, but even the unique car Mercedes-AMG One, which also accelerates in 2.9 seconds. The purely gasoline AMG GT 63 coupe with a power of 585 hp. accelerates to 100 km/h in 3.2 seconds. However, the maximum speed has increased only symbolically – from 315 km/h for the gasoline version to 320 km/h for the hybrid.

Like the petrol Mercedes-AMG GT 63, the hybrid now has an AMG Active Ride Control chassis with adaptive dampers that are combined into a hydraulic system that replaces traditional anti-roll bars. The steering rear axle is equipped with electric actuators, at speeds up to 100 km/h the rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front ones to improve maneuverability, and after 100 km/h all wheels turn in one direction to improve stability .

Brakes are equipped with 6-piston mechanisms on the front wheels and 1-piston mechanisms on the rear wheels. Especially for the hybrid, the diameter of the carbon-ceramic brake discs has been increased to 420 mm at the front and 380 mm at the rear. Standard on the new model are 20-inch wheels, but 21-inch wheels can also be ordered.

The complex of active aerodynamics is the same as that of gasoline coupes. Underneath the front bumper is a carbon fiber “lip” that extends downwards by 40mm when reaching speeds of 80km/h, and on the tailgate there is a retractable spoiler that has five positions.
