Celine Dion opens up about fashion, illness and the hope for a miracle

During a recent interview with Vogue for their Life in Looks series, the 56-year-old Canadian pop star looked back on her style over the years and talked about the mustard-colored Valentino coat she wore to the awards show. “I was very nervous, but at the same time it was a great honor,” she told the publication of her surprise appearance at the Grammy Awards in February. “That magic. That excitement. To see the fans, to see the crowd. To see show business again.”

For the five-time Grammy winner (who trusted celebrity stylist Lou Roach for the evening), the coat had not only a stylish but an emotional message—Dion told Vogue that she felt better when she had something to hold on to while going on stage. The singer then performed her 2019 song “Imperfections.”

Her appearance on stage at the ceremony was one of Dion’s few public appearances in the past few years since she was diagnosed with the rare and incurable neurological disorder Stiff Person Syndrome (SPS) in 2022. She stepped out at Los Angeles’ Crypto.com Arena to present the album of the year with her son, 23-year-old René-Charles Angelil, accompanying her to a standing ovation from the star-studded crowd. Dion herself won this award for the first time 27 years ago.

“My illness took a lot. But my son René Charles came and gave me his support. And to present the album of the year award to Taylor Swift was an honor because she’s at her peak and I’m the one giving it to her. But always it’s very, very touching when you get a standing ovation,” Dion added.

A source recently told People how seriously Dion’s appearance at the Grammys was planned. “It was an amazing night for her. She did well and the hope is that she can go on to do more things and ease back into life,” the source said. “Everyone was stopping her. She had a great date with Oprah and sang with Stevie Wonder. They were just having fun,” the source added.

About fashion and the first success

Dion also recently appeared on Vogue France, where she discussed how her style has changed over her decade-long career. “I wouldn’t say that I collaborate with designers, as that would be very pretentious of me. On the other hand, I can say that my whole life my mother has mended my tights, sweaters, coats and gloves, all my things for the winter. I was very lucky because I had 13 siblings and I got everyone’s handmade clothes,” says the star.

“After my first English-language album, I was able to buy designer clothes and started reading fashion magazines,” she continues, discussing the early years of her career after releasing her first English-language album, Unison, in 1990. “I treated myself to a Lagerfeld jacket the same way people treat themselves to diamonds.”

Waiting for a miracle in medicine

Elsewhere in the interview, Dion talks about her treatment for SPS, two years after she first announced her diagnosis. “I have not beaten the disease as it is still in me and always will be. I hope we will find a miracle, some way to cure it with scientific research, but for now I have to learn to live with it.

Five days a week I undergo sports, physical and vocal therapy. I’m working on my toes, my knees, my calves, my fingers, my singing, my voice… Now I have to learn to live with it and stop doubting myself,” concludes Dion, quoted by BGNES.
