The Zimmerman House is a mid-century building, an icon of residential construction

Actor Chris Pratt and his wife Katherine Schwarzenegger, daughter of the actor and former governor of California, have torn down the Zimmerman House, a mid-century building designed by Craig Ellwood. It is said to be an icon of 20th century housing in the state.

The couple bought the house and nearly an acre lot, across from that of Schwarzenegger’s mother Maria Shriver, in Los Angeles’ bustling Brentwood neighborhood last year for $12.5 million in an off-market sale. They commissioned architect Ken Ungar to replace the modest single-family home with a massive two-story, 15,000-square-foot “modern farmhouse” style mansion.

Built in 1950, the Zimmerman House is a prime example of the cool, clean California modernism pioneered by Ellwood and other architects, including Richard Neutra, Pierre Koenig, and Charles and Ray Eames.
