Courteney Cox: My boyfriend broke up with me the minute we stepped into family therapy

--

Five years ago, actress Courteney Cox decided to go to family therapy with her partner, musician Johnny McDade.

Instead of strengthening their relationship, it’s having the exact opposite effect, the Friends star reveals on the Mini Questions with Mini Driver podcast.

“He broke up with me the minute we walked into family therapy,” Cox admits of McDade.

She explains that at the time they were engaged, and his desire to break up was a complete shock.

“It was so intense! I had no idea something like this was coming. I was really shocked and it hurt so much,” Cox recalled.

The actress explains that she and McDade are going to therapy so the couple can talk about the boundaries they set for themselves and don’t want to cross.

Instead, the rocker broke up with Cox at the beginning of the session. “He wasn’t trying to surprise me. He was really in so much pain during our relationship,” she continues.

And she specifies that she uses the time after the breakup to work on herself and sort out the priorities in her life.

Cox, who later reunited with Johnny McDade, even called his decision “brave.”

“It takes a lot of courage to end a relationship where there’s so much passion. It’s far easier to stay and ride on momentum or make excuses out of fear of the pain,” explains the actress.

She says she’s grateful for what happened because her relationship with McDade is on a whole new level.

However, Cox emphasizes that she is not engaged to the musician, and at the moment the two have no such intentions. For now, the actress prefers to work on not taking everything so personally and asserting her own boundaries in a relationship.

Monica from “Friends”, as we all remember her, is again going to the same family therapist in front of whom the terrible breakup happened.

“At first I thought he was brutal, but I found out he’s actually great,” Courtney says of the therapist.

If she has any regrets, they aren’t about her relationship with McDade, but about raising her daughter Coco from her marriage to actor David Arquette.

To Minnie Driver, Cox states that she wishes she had been a stricter mother and a more assertive parent at times.

“I wanted to intervene in some personal situations, but Coco mostly wanted to be independent and do it on her own,” Kourtney adds.
