How the rating system of the world’s most famous smartphone testing site works

--

The smartphone has long become an indispensable part of most people’s daily life. Some use it for work, others for fun, but whatever the case, its role is significant. The question is, can the average person pick the right device for themselves without spending hours reading and watching reviews? The truth is, it can.

Everything you need to know in three numbers

In recent years, DXOMARK, the French digital device testing laboratory, has built a reputation as one of the most trusted sources when it comes to grading. This is due to the long and impartial protocols that every smartphone, tablet, camera, portable speaker that is tested goes through.

The end result is a single number in three categories – camera, display and battery – which is a combination of multiple components. Every product goes through the same stages so that it has an equal chance to prove its capabilities. The resulting value is then taken and placed in the context of other popular models to quickly and easily compare not only who is better, but also exactly how big the difference is between them. It is important to note that the scale is open, that is, there is no maximum upper limit, and usually a new model comes out on top every year, improving all other scores. This is completely normal because technology is developing at a fast pace.

But where can we find these results? One option is from the website of the French laboratory, and the other – from Bulgarian Telecom. Yettel recently entered into a strategic partnership with DXOMARK, which brings the ratings to the operator’s site. They can be found in the “Description” section for the smartphones that have been tested by the laboratory. This is a great initiative from Yettel that will really make it easier for users who want to choose the best device for themselves without reading a bunch of material on the subject. But what exactly are these ratings?

All important aspects

For some people, the camera is most important, others want a durable battery, others rely on the display being good enough to watch their favorite series. Each of these categories is individually reviewed by DXOMARK and evaluated based on a number of different factors.

The camera’s final score is determined by tests of photography, video capture, close-up shots, background blur capabilities and screen previews before the photo is taken. In total, 3,000 frames are captured with each phone and 150 minutes of video, with each of the listed aspects being weighted differently. The front-facing camera gets a completely different score, testing its photo and video capabilities with “only” 2,000 shots and 50 hours of video.

The display is subjected to 35 hours of intensive tests, which aim to test readability, colors, video playback, touch response, refresh and many more seemingly niche, but actually extremely important characteristics.

Each smartphone’s battery is subjected to 150 hours of use and recharge, looking at autonomy, efficiency and charging. These are the briefest possible explanations of each process, and it’s still a lot of information. More detailed explanations can be found on the DXOMARK site if you want to learn a little more. And if you just want to look at the ratings and draw relevant conclusions about your next purchase, then the Yettel online store is the place to be.
