FX’s Shogun was conceived as a miniseriesbut after racking up 9 million views in just its first week on streaming platforms, the team might try to make a sequel.
The possibilities are almost endless with these numbers. Based on the book of the same name by James Clavellthe series follows the fictional portrayal of a 17th-century Japanese leader, Lord Yoshi Toranaga, who struggles to survive as his enemies unite against him.
However, if the creators of the series want to continue with a second seasonthey will be forced to create new storylines, rather than building on the story from the single book. FX has neither confirmed nor denied a second season.
Before we get excited about the possibility of the future, here’s what the cast and crew have said so far about a possible but elusive second season. Co-creator and showrunner Justin Marks told The Direct that the season one finale is wrapping up “right where the book ends”.

He explained to The Hollywood Reporter that Shogun took nearly five years to complete, so the team is a long way from a sequel: “We did this series so long ago and there was a lot of post-production on it. It’s not a regular TV series where we’d already be in the writers’ room and even on set.”
Michaela Clavell, executive producer and daughter of James Clavell, is a little more optimistic that her father’s television legacy will live on. “The audience will tell us if there’s an appetite for it. We’ll see. That’s a great question. I’d like to know the full answer, but I don’tshe stated.

Editors Maria Gonzalez and Aika Miyake explained to ComicBook.com that when they were wrapping up the series, there were no “serious plans” for next seasonN. Gonzalez explained: “I think we are still in that situation. Not sure if it will happen. It is obvious that it is not up to usMiyake added: “Personally, I want to see a second season! … It’s definitely something to build on, for sure.”
