An extremely rare phenomenon in the Rhodopes. In one of the hunting farms, a snow-white albino roe deer was spotted high in the mountains. It has appeared around places where food is left for wild animals during the cold months.

The number of people who have seen the rare white doe can be counted on the fingers. Among the lucky few is the experienced wildlife photographer Tsvetomir Tsolov, who managed to capture the albino up close. “A white doe, not only on the territory of our country, but also worldwide, is extremely rare to see. Mathematically, you can’t say one in a million or one in a few million. For me, these photos are the best luck I’ve had in the forest,” he shares.

The unique shots were shot at the cost of a lot of coldness and enviable patience. “In the morning the temperature was minus 9 degrees, reaching a maximum of about 1 degree. I spent 8 hours and 25 minutes in the shelter. Without any heating, just with the equipment. It was only at six o’clock that I started to get up and move around a little inside”, explains the photographer.

It wasn’t until the fourth hour in the shelter that the white animal timidly peeked out of the forest and came out by the feeder. At such a time, even the slightest noise can drive him back.

You’re probably waiting to learn exactly where that white doe was spotted. However, we will deliberately hide its location. Not for anything else, but to protect this natural phenomenon from unscrupulous hunters.

Our team goes to the heart of the Rhodopes. After hours of hard climbing on dirt roads, it climbs high into the mountains. The approaching spring has melted the snow and the animals show their muzzles in the open less and less. The chance of seeing them, even if only briefly, is greater in the built shelters around the feeders. Finally, our camera managed to capture 3 roe deer that almost came to pose in front of her.

Roe deer roam around the food left behind. One of the activities of the game farms is to take care of the animals in the months when the thick snow makes finding food difficult. Specialists carefully monitor the animals – their number, age and behavior. Photo traps are also used, which take pictures of any movement around the feeders. Continuous monitoring allows better planning of population development.

Albino is the result of inbreeding. It appears to be at least 5 years old. During that time, however, no one has seen him anywhere. It cannot have come from far away, as roe deer are settled animals with a narrow range. “Probably the more hidden way of life, the more closed way of life, especially of the roe deer, has allowed it not to be seen and to survive in nature”, suggests engineer Zdravko Bakalov from the SDP.

The variety of fauna in the Rhodopes is among the many reasons to go for a walk in the mountains. Wild animals rarely allow people near them, and it is generally not desirable to disturb them. On the other hand, the picturesque mountain hills offer enough hiking routes outside the hunting grounds.

If we choose Velingrad as a starting point, there are dozens of paths to the surrounding hills. Nestled in the Chepin Valley, the town is a gateway to the precipices of Pasovo skali, to the green pastures of Yundola and to a whole cascade of dams. Very close to Velingrad is the geographical point where the 24th meridian and the 42nd parallel intersect. The only narrow-gauge railway in our country also passes through the city, winding along the narrow gorges to the majestic Rila and Pirin.
