Declaration of the 43rd Extraordinary Congress of the BZNS

Today is April 20. The day on which the modern Bulgarian state was born. The April epic led to the Constantinople Conference, to the Russo-Turkish war and made Bulgarian freedom and independence possible.

BZNS believes that this is one of the most appropriate dates to celebrate a national holiday of Bulgaria.

Today’s congress is symbolically connected with the urges for freedom and democracy of the Bulgarian people, principles and goals that were fundamental to the outbreak of the April uprising.

In its centuries-old history, the BZNS has always defended Bulgaria’s place in the Free World. We remember that every time this order was violated, there were national catastrophes.

BZNS professes Euro-Atlantic values, not as foreign political will, but as part of Bulgaria’s national interest. For us it is – Bulgaria as part of the values and economy in the family of democratic nations.

BZNS has visions for reforming the EU to make it stronger and more meaningful in the face of new challenges related to geopolitical confrontation, conflicts and Russia’s war against Ukraine, social problems on the continent and cultural changes related to migrants.

The ideology of BZNS is based on protecting the interests of the working owner, the people’s power and respect for cultural differences. BZNS considers our nation as an indivisible whole. We have always fought for peace and against dictatorships. The BZNS has fallen victim to despotic regimes, but it has never preached, much less used violence against political opponents.

Today, we observe with concern the irresponsible behavior of our political elite and its inability to seek solutions to pressing problems.

Bulgaria is facing the threat of populists who herald the end of democracy. We see society moving away from the political process, and this poses a huge risk of the emergence of a new form of dictatorship.

We from BZNS declare that we continue to fight and defend democracy, as values and a system in international and domestic political terms.

BZNS will be guided by this principle in its participation in the upcoming elections in June. We see our role as a guarantor of Bulgaria’s pro-European policy and orientation.

We are convinced that our state and society still need peace, bread, freedom and democracy!
