National Student Essay Competition organized by the Department of “Philosophy and Political Sciences” and the Department of “Sociology” at the Faculty of Philosophy of the Southwest University “Neofit Rilski”, Blagoevgrad. The competition aims to provide a forum for talented students from the twelfth grade of the schools in the region and the country, giving them the opportunity to develop their views on the topics proposed by the department, announced Prof. Dr. Valentina Milenkova, Dean of Philosophy faculty, SUSU “N. In these wonderful days, when in a few weeks the successful end of your secondary education will come and you will stand at a crossroads, we suggest that you do not stop there, but continue your education in the prestigious specialties “Political Science”, “Sociology” or “Philosophy” of the Southwest University “Neofit Rilski” in Blagoevgrad. This is possible if you participate in the Student Essay Competition organized by the Department of Philosophy and Political Science and the Department of Sociology and demonstrate the ability to think independently, good style and the ability to formulate and defend your theses.

We would like the topics that we bring to your attention to push you forward a few decades, when you will already be successful, mature people who have done a lot of good things for yourself and for society. Give flight to your fantasy and tell us how you see the future of Bulgaria, Europe and the world. Outline for us in broad, but thick strokes, what will be your path, what will be your contribution to the future of our country and the world, what challenges and difficulties you expect to encounter, in what direction YOU would like to change society and the living environment in the coming years several decades, so that the people around you become better and more successful, and life in general – more secure, desirable and beautiful.

Each of your stories will express, of course, your dreams. At the same time, we would like you to point out to us why your dreams are “destined” to come true: what is that miraculous heart, which after some time will thump inside them and give them life?

Our competition is voluntary and organized according to the Olympic principle, according to which the winners are not as important as the participants. In our case, each of you will present your own unique vision of the future, to ultimately make it a reality.

Description of the Student Essay Contest

The competition is held on a voluntary basis. Participants may develop one or more of the topics listed below.

Topics:

1. I am Bulgaria and its European future;
2. Bulgaria in Europe: lights and shadows;
3. Me and My Connectedness to the World: Communication and Alienation;
4. What makes me (not) stay in Bulgaria?

Participants:

• The students of the twelfth grade.

Text Requirements:

• Volume – up to 14,000 characters (12 points, 1.5 spacing, Times New Roman);
• File format – DOC;
• Type of text – essay, reflection.

Deadline:

Essays must be received according to the anonymity instruction below by 5:00 PM on May 21, 2024.

Essay submission procedure:

• Essay grading is anonymous. Therefore, each author sends: his three names, city, school, title of the essay, address and contact phone number, writing them in his email, and on the title page of the essay, he writes only his title without the name of the author. Essays are sent to the e-mail address: [email protected]
• The Department of Philosophy and Political Science and the Department of Sociology will conduct an anonymous evaluation of the essays received, after which the ranked essays will be identified.

Assessors

A committee composed of members of the Department of Philosophical and Political Sciences and the Department of Sociology.

Evaluation criteria

In its work, the evaluation committee is guided by the following general criteria:

• logical structure of the exposition;
• presence of those supported by argumentation;
• prognostic skills, combined with fantasy, but also with a sense of the dominant trends in social development;
• careful selection of relevant facts in view of the stated theses;
• non-patterned thinking, language culture and style of expression.

Announcement of results

• By May 25, 2024 through feedback to authors and schools.

Awards

• Certificate of Achievement in the “Student Essay Competition”. The ceremonial handing over of the certificate of achievement in the “Student Essay Contest” will take place on June 7, 2024 at the Neofit Rilski Secondary School – Blagoevgrad. The certificate entitles its holder to be enrolled as a student in the “Political Science” major, the “Sociology” major or the “Philosophy” major;
• Publication of the awarded essays in the e-magazine “NotaBene” of the Center for Research and Dissemination of Political and Philosophical Ideas at the Department of “Philosophy and Political Sciences” at the Faculty of Philosophy of the YSU “N. Rilski” – Blagoevgrad;
• Books and a visit to the “N. Rilski” in order to participate in a meeting for familiarization and examination of the Faculty of Philosophy.
