The Regional Health Inspectorate announced the first case of whooping cough in the Veliko Tarnovo region this year. The patient is a 17-year-old youth.

The young man, who has been confirmed to have pertussis at the National Center for Infectious and Parasitic Diseases, has been vaccinated and the illness is mild.

The 17-year-old is being treated at home, Dr. Evgenia Nedeva, director of the RZI – Veliko Tarnovo, told BNR.

His contact classmates from Veliko Tarnovo school are under medical supervision.

Anti-epidemic measures such as frequent ventilation and disinfection of surfaces are widespread.

Vaccination is the main preventive measure against whooping cough, health authorities remind.

The report of RZI Veliko Tarnovo for 2022 and 2023 shows that the level of immunization and reimmunization against the disease in the region is above the national average.

Checks are carried out with GPs on the scope of whooping cough immunizations.
