Against the background of the very dry and warm winter, the condition of the crops is surprisingly good at the moment. This was stated in the studio of the Dobrudja media group by Prof. Ivan Kiryakov – head of the “Selection of Cereal and Legume Crops” department at the Dobrudja Agricultural Institute – General Toshevo. He explained that the sowing of autumn crops was very late due to the lack of rains last October, and the late emergence of crops and the inability to germinate was not good for the high-yielding varieties.

Prof. Kiryakov also noted the small amount of rain since the beginning of the year in the district. In January, the amount of precipitation was around 30-40 l/sq.m., in February only 2 l/sq.m. In March, no more than 15 liters for the region. In April, the high temperatures at the beginning led to the destruction of a large part of the crops, which is a very rare phenomenon, the specialist pointed out, pointing out that this usually happens at the beginning of May.
The moment when the vegetation was supposed to start, there was a drought, but there was enough moisture for the crops to overcome this drought, Prof. Kiryakov pointed out, stressing that the rains that have fallen in recent days are very good for cereal crops. There is a danger for them only if frost falls and the temperature drops below zero.
There are no particular problems regarding the phytosanitary status of the crops.
Hopefully, with these relatively lower temperatures, growth will slow down a bit and allow for greater stability, the agro specialist said.
He again recommended that farmers spread the risk. According to the words, it can be done by not using 5-6 varieties from the same company, but choosing different ones and at least 10% of the areas being native selection.
Prof. Kiryakov admitted that the problem of native selection is the lack of advertising. He announced that, in addition to the traditional varieties, more than 25 new varieties of cereal crops will be presented during the upcoming Open Day at the DZI in June.

Prof. Ivan Kiryakov is part of the regional commission that examines the condition of the crops. She starts new checks from tomorrow, as the last survey from the end of March showed that 60% of the autumn trees are in good condition, and 40% – in very good condition.
The areas sown with wheat in the Dobrich region are over 1.114 million decares.
