After the goods supply chain was disrupted in the West due to tensions in the Red Sea, Europe will now have a breather with the planned second railway line between Turkey and Bulgaria.
The Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloglu said that considering the growing railway potential between Bulgaria and Turkey, the two neighbors signed a memorandum of understanding regarding the creation of a second railway crossing. “With this second railroad freight capacity from east to west and vice versa will increase. This will significantly contribute to increasing the rail potential for trade,” he noted.
According to the statement made by the Ministry of Infrastructure in Ankara, Minister Uraloglu participated via video conference in the event organized by the World Bank. Uraloglu said this new border crossing will be part of a transport corridor that serves as an important land and water bridge between the east and the west., holds a unique promise of economic growth for the countries of the Balkans, Central Asia and the Caucasus, and even for the countries of the Middle East. “This project highlights the power of investment and collaborative efforts to triple trade volumes in the Central Corridor and halving transit times by 2030.”
Minister Uraloglu noted that Turkey’s rail infrastructure is sufficient to meet current demand. “We have not encountered any capacity problems in the transportation of goods by our national railway carrier TCDD coming from the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars line to Edirne.
He emphasized that the stakeholders of this corridor need to come together and look for ways to eliminate the problems and prioritizing decisions. “With this understanding, we frequently meet with the corridor countries and discuss measures that will increase the capacity of the corridor and remove bottlenecks.
The Organization for Economic Co-operation and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe are looking for methods of harmonization to facilitate transport, customs procedures and transit through logistics countries,” he noted.
Uraloglu continued that it would be possible to quickly remove obstacles by reaching a common understanding and abandoning some administrative proceduresto facilitate procedures and transactions so that transit cargo can reach its destination as unhindered as possible.
The minister concluded that the corridor will contribute to increased trade, economic growth and development by providing a strategic link between Asia and Europe.
