--

The campaign to ennoble the Pleven Zoo “Kailaka” is gaining new followers. After the beginning, set a week ago by the minister of ecology Petar Dimitrov, the mayor of Pleven Dr. Valentin Hristov and dozens of families from Pleven, who planted trees in the area on the site of removed old and sick ones, this Saturday and Sunday volunteers and employees cleaned and painted facilities , some of the old signposts have also been replaced, the local administration reports.

“After the announcement of the campaign, I myself did not expect such a strong response – acquaintances, friends call, people come to the place and ask how they can be useful and how and when to join the initiative. Of course, there is no lack of pessimists, but they are units. Thus, after a series of inquiries, we organized ourselves in a second volunteer initiative”, said Lyubomir Andreev – Director of the Municipal Enterprise “Akvarel”. The company manages the zoo and is responsible for its maintenance.

Results of the action at “Kailaka” Zoo during the past weekends:

– the entrance to the zoo has been painted and refreshed;

– the railings next to the rooms of the emus and bear bears have been painted;

– the bird house in the lake in the park was cleaned and painted;

– part of the nets surrounding the animal premises were cleaned;

– part of the pedestrian alleys have been cleaned;

– grass areas are disinfected;

-changes are part of the signposts in the area.

Kailaka Zoo can also boast of the first changes in the number and composition of its inhabitants – based on a breeding loan agreement, an exchange was made with the hunting zoo – an emu has arrived in Pleven for a porcupine, and the birds are now a couple. A visitor to the zoo made a donation – a swan-like goose, which has already successfully acclimatized in its new home.

The idea of the campaign for the improvement of the “Kailaka” Zoo is to make the place with which a generation of Pleven residents have fond memories cleaner and friendlier for both the animals and the visitors. The waterfowl pond will be cleaned of debris and fallen leaves and branches, the animal cages will also be cleaned and refreshed. Possibilities are being sought and the provision of new animal species to enrich the zoo. Donors are already helping with food for the animals.

About 160 animals of 27 species live in “Kailaka” Zoo. It was created in 1956. With a contract dated 22.01.2021, the Kailaka Protected Area was provided free of charge for the management of the Pleven Municipality. The zoo falls within the scope of the Kailaka Protected Area and is public state property according to Act No. 4910 of 14.04.2010. According to the March 2005 decision of the Municipal Council – Pleven, the zoo was given over to the management of the municipal enterprise “Akvarel”.
