With a decision from today, April 22, St. the synod determined the following list of eligible bishops, candidates for the metropolitan election in the Sliven Diocese:
• Great Bishop Sionis
• Bishop Arsenius of Znepole
• Bishop Gerasim of Melnysh
• Bishop Pachomius of Branica
• Bishop Macarius of Glavinice
• Bishop Isaac of Velbazhda.
All six participated in the previous, subsequently canceled vote. Diocese voters then had the opportunity to choose from 10 names and nominate two candidates. With the greatest support was the until recently vicar of the metropolitan of Sliven – Bishop Jerotei. In the second round, a second candidate – Bishop Michael – was nominated with the necessary majority. However, the Synod canceled this election and ordered an inspection of the diocese – its property and financial status, as well as the people included in the electoral lists – clergy and laity.
The non-recognition of the election caused dissatisfaction among clergy and laity in the Sliven Diocese, there was even a protest in Sofia in front of the Holy Synod building. How the diocese will react now remains to be seen.
