CETIN Bulgaria launched the 5G Balkans project to improve optical connectivity along the cross-border transport corridor Sofia – Serbia (part of the Orient/East-Med TEN-T corridor) by providing conditions for 5G service for CAM (Connected & Automated Mobility ).

The project will contribute to the development of innovative technologies and advanced solutions to improve mobility and connectivity in the region, as well as meet the mandatory requirements for autonomous car scenarios.

The 5G Balkans project is financed by the European Union’s Connected Europe Facility (CEF2) under grant agreement No. 101133895 and will be implemented in the period January 2024 – December 2026. The estimated cost of the project is estimated at over BGN 13,000,000, with half of the funds provided by the EU program, and the rest by the main beneficiaries in the 5G Balkans.

The main beneficiaries of the project are CETIN Bulgaria, CETIN in Serbia and Technical University – Sofia, and Yettel Bulgaria and Yettel in Serbia are associated partners. As part of the CETIN project, Bulgaria will upgrade the existing section of its optical route in Sofia and build about 100 km of new high-speed fixed connectivity from Sofia to Kalotina. CETIN in Serbia will operate on the Kalotina – Dimitrovgrad section in Serbia, connecting established base stations to its existing high-speed optical network. Technical University of Sofia will carry out independent measurements and analyzes on the built and upgraded route Sofia – Kalotina. The measurements will cover both verification of optical path parameters and verification of potential interference in a frequency range intended for future road safety applications.

CETIN & Yettel, which operate in Bulgaria and Serbia, are part of the PPF Telecom Group, together with companies in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. With its telecommunications division, PPF Telecom Group is a leading provider of telecommunications services in the CEE region. The group’s companies in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Bulgaria and Serbia are established players in the telecom market, with long-term investments in modern telecommunications infrastructure, which they continue to develop.
