Plovdiv Municipality celebrates Earth Day on April 22

World Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22. It is the largest non-religious holiday in the world, which is celebrated by millions of people. The reason is one – we all live on the only planet Earth.

This year’s theme of the campaign is “Planet vs. Plastic” – the great challenge of our time. At the dawn of the introduction of plastic products, no one imagined that their distribution would reach such proportions. Scientists believe that we have already entered the Anthropocene epoch – a geological period marked by human activity. While other eras were determined by natural forces, the Anthropocene is determined by us.

It is time for bold, creative and innovative solutions. This requires action at all levels – from businesses to local authorities and governments. Each individual also has real influence and power as a consumer, voter, and community member for change. The world needs us and our actions. There is so much everyone can do to protect and help restore the planet.

This year, the “Environmental Protection” Directorate at the Plovdiv Municipality has planned a number of initiatives to celebrate Earth Day:

– Since the beginning of this month, static and dynamic advertising facilities have been placed at ten intersections in the city, which appeal to people – Let’s recycle waste! To make every day Earth Day.

– Jointly with “Bulekopak” JSC, open lessons will be held at NU “P. R. Slaveykov” on the topic of “Separate collection and recycling of waste” and how this can be combined with the care of domestic animals. For this purpose, a vending machine for dog/cat food will be placed on the school grounds for a certain period of time. Children will be clearly shown how they themselves can simultaneously take care of both the preservation of nature and delight a pet or a stray animal with a dose of granulated food.
If the initiative becomes popular, the vending machine can also be presented to the graduates of other schools in Plovdiv.

– Earth Day will be celebrated with various activities in all areas of the municipality. Waste clean-up campaigns and campaigns for planting flowers and bushes in kindergartens and schools are organized. In addition, kindergartens and schools have been provided with cardboard bins for the separate collection of packaging waste. According to preliminary information, more than 4,500 children will take part in the implementation of the events.

The initiatives are implemented with the courtesy of the recovery organizations with which the municipality has successfully partnered for many years – “Oil Recycling” EOOD, “Bulekopak” AD and “Ecopak Bulgaria” AD, as well as municipal enterprises and regional administrations.
