The Pazardzhik Municipality’s “Flowers for Garbage” campaign that took place on Saturday attracted great interest among the city’s residents. Nearly 600 people joined the separate waste collection and recycling initiative, collecting together textiles, plastics, paper and electronics.

In just a few hours, campaign participants collected 540 kg of textiles and 280 kg. plastic. More than 1,400 kilograms of paper and 2,060 kilograms of end-of-use electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE) achieved a new record in the initiative that has become a tradition in Pazardzhik.

Thousands of flowers, saplings and bags of compost were distributed to the participants by the Municipality in gratitude for the responsible separate collection of waste, which became the subject of the campaign two days before the International Earth Day, which we celebrate today.

All waste has been sorted and removed with the assistance of partners of Pazardzhik Municipality and will be recycled as part of a program to promote environmentally friendly behavior of institutions and society. The whole world celebrates Earth Day, which this year is held under the title “Planet vs. Plastic”, raising the increasingly important topics for society – climate change, environmental protection and biodiversity.

Initiatives around the world today involve hundreds of millions of people on the planet, and on the island of Penang in Malaysia alone, more than a hundred thousand people are expected to take part in the largest waste cleanup in history.
