The head of the National Theater, Vasil Vassilev, has filed a lawsuit against director Alexander Morfov for BGN 100,000. This became clear on Monday from a Facebook post by Reni Vrangova, the director’s wife, in which she reflects on the term “case – slap”. The official occasion is a speech by Morfov during his award for best director with “Askeer”.

“A criminal case”

“Vasil Vassilev has filed a criminal case, with a civil claim for BGN 100,000, against Alexander Morfov, on the occasion of his speech upon receiving his “Askeer” award for best director. The case is on April 26 in the Sofia District Court”Vrangova states in her post.

And then she recalls that the saga against the family has already been going on for 2 years.

“After almost two years of administrative harassment, orders in the yellow media, investigative commissions, ban on work, dismissal, threats, ban on performances, cases…, a case also filed by Desislava Atanasova as the chairperson of the PP of GERB. Case-Slammer ?? ? Orders – clubs??? What else should we expect ??????she points out.

Why is Vassilev filing a lawsuit?

Last year, during the Askeer awards ceremony, Morfov said that the award was the fifth for him, and the other 4 were at the National Theater and added – “That party-nomenclature insignificant person who is the director at the moment is hiding somewhere. But let’s not turn it into a political conversation”.

Most likely, this is also the reason for filing the case.

The tension in the National Theater erupted in 2022, after the parliamentary elections in October. Then, the chief director of our first troupe, Alexander Morfov, announced that the then publicist of the theater, Velislava Krasteva, accompanied the honorary chairman of the DPS, Ahmed Dogan.

Morfov asked the new director of the theater Vasil Vassilev to take a stand. After he did not do so, the famous director scratched the door of the publicist’s office in the National Theater with the inscriptions “firehouse” and “office” of the DPS, “disappear” and tore off the sign with her name.

A long argument between the two parties followed, and the scandal was quelled with the resignation of Velislava Krasteva from the post and the removal of the director from the National Theater.

The acting troupe split in two over the case. Some were defenders of the director, and others of Alexander Morfov, and there were several protests in his support. The resignation of the director was requested, but the head of state Rumen Radev and the minister of culture appointed by him, maestro Nayden Todorov, did not take a stance on the case.

In a series of investigations, Mediapool established in January 2023 that the director of the National Theater, Vasil Vassilev, continues to be a member of the operational bureau of the Bulgarian Progressive Line (BPL) party.

This is the party that former deputy Krasimir Yankov created and headed after he left the BSP in scandal. Yankov himself confirmed these facts to Mediapool.

Later, it became clear that Vasil Vasilev had secured jobs in the cultural institution for his fellow party members and their relatives.
