He spoke on the subject, as well as on the occasion of an upcoming national conference of the Union of Astronomers in Bulgaria, which will take place at the “Ep. Konstantin Preslavski” Shumen University, on the occasion of the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Astronomy Center at the higher educational institution, opened in 1999, so that schoolchildren, students, residents and guests of the city could observe the solar eclipse through the Center’s telescopes.
“On this occasion, the Union of Astronomers in Bulgaria decided that its national conference this year will take place in Shumen from May 9 to 11. This is a recognition for the modest team of the Shumen University Astronomical Team and for the city, which is among the few in the country, I would say the only one who develops professional astronomy outside of Sofia.
Neither the colleagues in Plovdiv nor in Blagoevgrad have an observatory like we have on the Shumen plateau”, one of the most modern at the moment. Thanks to a common collaboration and the National Roadmap for Scientific Infrastructure under the “Ratio” project, a large part of the equipment that currently works in our observatory was financed, ranking it in second place after the National Astronomical Observatory of Rozhen”, said Prof. Marchev.
