“We expect a quick decision from the authorities because the vaccine must be found by pregnant women. Given that we want to protect pregnant women and children, let the state move and provide the vaccine, which will be free. We have to solve the problem state-wise”, she added.

According to Associate Professor Snezhina Lazova, pediatric pulmonologist and pediatrician, pregnant women must be convinced that the vaccine is safe. She specified that early diagnosis is important for the disease. “The sooner treatment is started, the better. With adequate antibiotic treatment, the patient is contagious up to 5 days after starting the antibiotic, the untreated ones continue to be contagious for up to two to three weeks, while the symptoms continue,” said Lazova.
Epidemiologist Dr. Christiana Bacelova said that the proven cases of whooping cough are increasing quite a bit. “There is a fear that the cases will increase. At the moment, it is not the seasonality of the disease. It is summer-autumn. Whooping cough is an acute respiratory infection that should not be underestimated. The highest risk of severe course is in the unvaccinated. In the case of the vaccinated, it depends on whether the entire vaccination schedule has been completed,” she added. Bacelova specified that in Western Europe additional revaccination doses are added every 10 years.
