Killer houses threaten the lives of residents and guests of Veliko Tarnovo and cause shock and horror among foreign tourists. In recent years, the situation with the old houses, declared cultural monuments, is becoming more and more alarming day by day. After three houses collapsed on the famous “Oplchenska” street, now the next one is on its way, located on the main street on the way to Tsarevets. Many people and cars pass by this street all the time, and if the house happens to collapse during the day, there can be tragic consequences. The dangerous part of the sidewalk is surrounded by metal railings, signal strips are also placed. However, this is not enough to secure the area. The problem with the old and crumbling houses in the old part of Veliko Tarnovo is not from yesterday, but it has not been able to find its final solution for so many years.
The reason for this is that the houses have their own owners and heirs, most of whom have long given up on these scumbags and don’t want to pay a penny to repair them or at least make them safe. At the same time, however, the owners do not give a single word about handing them over to the municipality for management or at least for demolition. Thus, the municipal employees themselves remain with their hands tied. They cannot take possession and dispose of other people’s property, as this would be self-government, which is punishable by law. At the same time, there remains the threat of the sudden demolition of one of the old buildings that have outlived their time and the occurrence of an incident with possible tragic consequences. And for the residents of Tarnovo themselves, the shame remains from the bewilderment they see in the eyes of the tourists. And if for native tourists the dilapidated houses are still a sight to which they are largely accustomed, then for the guests who came here from abroad, the shock is complete. “I witnessed how a group of Asian tourists for ten minutes photographed like crazy with cameras one of the half-collapsed houses meters from the Tsarevets fortress. These people did not pay as much attention to Tsarevets himself as to this fellow. They were evidently very surprised, for as they captured the sight they shook their heads, clicked their mouths, and talked to each other, visibly excited. After that, their photos will go around the world and you can imagine what advertising and image they will bring to the “cultural-historical capital” of Bulgaria”, Katerina Hristova is angry.
The last case in which a 170-year-old house, part of an ensemble cultural monument, collapsed in Veliko Tarnovo was in March of this year. The building was the property of the Transfiguration Monastery, but the monastic brotherhood, due to a lack of financial resources, did not take care of it for years and allowed it to collapse.
