A member of the District Court in Haskovo imposed a measure of remand “Detention in custody” against a Bulgarian citizen wanted in Cyprus for theft, illegal possession of property, prostitution and pimping, the Court announced. R.A. (48 years old) was detained on April 18 at the “Captain Andreevo” border checkpoint upon entering the country.

The island nation’s Famagusta District Court is seeking him on a European Arrest Warrant (EAW), which carries a possible maximum prison sentence of 14 years for the most serious of these offences.

According to the court, there is a real danger A.G. to hide. His international manhunt came about as a result of unscrupulous procedural conduct. He was found and brought to the District Court – Famagusta, after which he was released on bail, but violated the conditions of his release and absconded from the Cypriot judicial authorities.

His detention is a guarantee for his appearance before the court in the actual proceedings for his extradition, the court explained. The decision is subject to appeal and protest before the Court of Appeal – Plovdiv.

There was a similar case in the court in Haskovo yesterday, when the magistrates also detained a Turkish citizen for a fake trademark in Romania.
