The district court in Haskovo took the most severe measure of remand and kept the detained Turkish truck driver in custody, in which 400 kg of heroin was found.

“I am a victim. I became a sacrifice,” Hussein Khair said today in the courtroom. He was arrested at the Kapitan Andreevo border crossing after customs officials found more than 400 kg of heroin in his truck. The District Prosecutor’s Office in Haskovo requested that the 63-year-old Turk remain in custody, and his defense – that he be released, because he is innocent.

New details about the case emerged in court, which were spared Saturday’s press conference. It turned out that the driver went through 3 x-ray checks. In two of them, the equipment did not detect any narcotic substance. The foreigner works for a company that sent him to Iran to load mattresses and then go through Turkey, Bulgaria and Romania. The drugs were stuffed into the mattresses, but they were factory sealed.

The prosecutor in the case, Darina Slavova, insisted that the man remain in custody, but explained to journalists that the investigation is in the initial stage and that there is some evidence to be collected. Slavova was not certain whether she would write an indictment after the end of the investigation.

Gergana Pisareva, Khair’s official lawyer, explained that at this stage there is nothing definitive against her client. She pointed out that Khair was calm all the time, that there was no violation and that his truck was most likely tracked by a GPS system . He then asked the court to impose a monetary guarantee, to confiscate his passport so that he does not leave Bulgaria and to be fitted with a tracking bracelet.

Hussain Khair gave explanations before the duty judge. It was clear from his words that he knew nothing about drugs.
