A 48-year-old Bulgarian man wanted in Cyprus for theft, illegal possession of property, prostitution and pimping received the most severe remand measure “detention in custody”. It was imposed on him by the Haskovo District Court, Themida reported.

The man with the initials R.D.A. was placed on an international wanted list based on a European Arrest Warrant issued by the District Court of Famagusta, Paralimni in Cyprus. He was detained at the “Captain Andreevo” border crossing upon entering the country on April 18, 2024. The most serious of these crimes is punishable by up to 14 years in prison.

According to the court in Haskovo, there is a real danger that the man will go into hiding. Although he is a Bulgarian citizen, with a known address in the country, evident from the content of the European Arrest Warrant, his international search came about as a result of dishonest procedural behavior. He was found and brought to the Famagusta District Court, whereupon he was released on bail, but breached the conditions of his release and absconded from Cypriot judicial authorities. The search for him lasted for a long time – from September 2019 until his detention at the “Captain Andreevo” checkpoint.

With these considerations, the court justified the adoption of a remand measure “Detention in custody” as a guarantee for his appearance before the court in the actual proceedings for his extradition. The ruling is subject to appeal and protest before the Court of Appeal – Plovdiv on April 30, 2024 at 10:15 a.m.
