Former finance minister Simeon Dyankov taught Kiril Petkov’s class at Harvard and they have known each other since then. Dyankov himself shared this with BBC.

Dyankov said that in recent months he met with Boyko Borisov, Kiril Petkov, Hristo Ivanov and Delyan Peevski because of his initiative to help Ukraine.

“At the moment, they really don’t talk to each other as far as I understand. I, by coincidence, know them because we worked here and I taught at Harvard when Kirill was a student there. I taught his class,” said Dyankov.

According to him, Peevski is a bigger driver for aid to Ukraine than other politicians in our country, because in the parliament he insists on sending both humanitarian aid and equipment and ammunition. Delyan Dobrev indicated as the most active on the topic of energy.

“The two of them are driving the transfer from Russian to European or American technology in Kozloduy, against Lukoil, which the PP kind of supports,” commented the former minister.

He denied receiving an offer to be part of the cabinet. In the upcoming elections, he expects GERB to win with a significant margin and that he can choose whether to work with PP-DB or DPS and ITN. He shared that as a right-wing financier he prefers his party to work with PP-DB, but in recent months both DPS and ITN have behaved like right-wing parties. “The next regular government can pin two big medals on its lapel – entry into Schengen and the Eurozone,” he pointed out. According to him, it is precisely because of these two goals that a regular cabinet will be formed in the next National Assembly. And he added that the sanctions under the global “Magnitsky” law should not prevent the formation of a majority in the parliament.

Dyankov assured that he will not be part of the lists of GERB in the upcoming elections. Speculations about this appeared after he appeared at a GERB event in Plovdiv two days ago. Today, however, he said that he was in the city at the invitation of former mayor Ivan Totev, they talked about archaeology, and Borisov called him and invited him to the GERB event.

The country will certainly not join the Eurozone from January 1, 2025, he is convinced. According to him, if the next government works hard, we may adopt the euro from 1 January 2026, but it is more likely to be from New Year 2027. There is no way we can join in the middle of either year as we will double-entry bookkeeping must be maintained.

“I can’t react because I don’t know enough about Mrs. Yoncheva, who used to be from the left. I’m not surprised, although I don’t know Mrs. Yoncheva very well, because one of the things that becomes clear in my conversations with these politicians, who are all in the center-right, is that in their thinking, and in Central and Eastern Europe, the difference is no longer there. Such transfers do not surprise me”, commented Dyankov on the promotion of Elena Yoncheva as a candidate for MEP. She was nominated by the movement structure in Blagoevgrad.
