From the beginning of the year have been registered so far in Blagoevgrad region nine cases of whooping cough.

This was announced by Dr. Veselka Moncheva, director of the Directorate “Supervision of Infectious Diseases” at the Regional Health Inspectorate.

“Children continue to attend school, but the classes themselves do not mix with other classes in common pursuits. The class itself is monitored within 14 days by a medical person, and if they have any complaints, the children and parents are referred to the general practitioner,” added Dr. Moncheva.

Regarding how we can protect ourselves from whooping cough, the expert at the Regional Health Inspectorate pointed out that this can be done through our well-known masks that we used during COVID-19. Vaccination is the other important thing that should not be neglected.

“The whooping cough vaccine is among the mandatory ones in the immunization calendar. Its placement starts from the second month of the baby, that is, the actual immunization is at the second, third and fourth months, then there is re-immunization, which is one year after the third reception, then at six years and at 12 years is the last re-immunization,” said Dr. Moncheva.

According to her, the disease is most dangerous for small children, who in the first month after birth they are not yet immunized. “With them, the course of the disease itself is the most severe. It is important to note that for now the situation with whooping cough in Blagoevgrad region is relatively calm, because all cases are mild.

Only three cases of them were hospitalized and the children are currently healthy. There should be no panic. I appeal to all parents to pay attention to whether their children are immunized,” she specified.
