A significant reduction in mortality in the hospital in Gorna Oryahovitsa, a year after the opening of an intensive sector for therapeutically ill patients, reports the MBAL. The mortality rate of hospitalized patients has almost doubled – while in 2022 it was 2.7% – 190 died, in dropped to 1.4% -103 died hospitalized. “I hope that this indicator is the beginning of a positive trend”, commented the manager of MBAL, Dr. Ivan Ivanov. “For the first time, the mortality rate in the hospital is noticeably decreasing, compared to the years before the pandemic, where the mortality rate was understandably very high. For the period 2017-2019, it was about 1.8% on an annual basis”.
The intensive care unit for therapeutic patients was opened exactly one year ago in the hospital. MBAL “St. Ivan Rilski” was one of a total of 132 medical facilities in the country that implemented repair works under the “Measures to deal with the pandemic” procedure of the OPRD. The beneficiary of the procedure – the Ministry of Health, allocated BGN 307,000 including VAT to the Gorno Oryahiv hospital for the intensive care sector.
At the beginning of the year, the intensive sector was equipped with the latest generation equipment, purchased with European funds under the project “Strengthening the capacity of the hospital network for crisis response” under the OP “Regions in Growth” (2014-2020). It amounts to BGN 362,470 and was provided free of charge by the Ministry of Health, and the package includes a portable X-ray device, a patient monitor, a system for complex management, control and disposal of hospital waste through microwave decontamination, an electrocardiograph and a top-of-the-line echograph.
The medical facility continues to equip the sector, providing a defibrillator, remote monitoring monitors, etc. with its own funds.
“The factors for the reduction of complications and mortality after the opening of the intensive sector are several – everything necessary for intensive treatment and care of the seriously ill is provided, 24/7 continuous monitoring of patients by qualified teams is provided, and opportunities for rapid response, in addition to intensive care beds are in the immediate vicinity of the Emergency Service structure and have their own elevator”, commented Dr. Ivan Ivanov.
The department has a capacity of 14 intensive care beds. After its opening, from April 10 of this year to April 10, 2024, of the 7,788 patients who passed through the hospital, 590 were treated in the intensive care unit.
