A sports celebration “130 years since the arrival of the Swiss gymnastics teachers in Bulgaria” was held at the Neofit Rilski Secondary School in Blagoevgrad. In the indoor sports hall of the university, students from the “Physical Education and Sport” specialty, teachers from the “Theory and Methodology of Physical Education” department and students from the Third Primary School “Dimitar Talev” – Blagoevgrad tested their strength in various competitions – basketball, football, volleyball , tennis, relay games and badminton.

In 1894, the first 10 physical education teachers arrived in Bulgaria from Switzerland, who laid the foundations of the organized sports movement in our country after the Liberation. Daniel Blanchut, Alois Bunter, Jacques Fardel, Charles Champeau, Louis Ayer, August Wecker, Georges de Regibus, Victor Roberti, Emile Küpfer, Charles Duvanel arrived in Bulgaria. The then minister of education Georgi Zhivkov, the chemistry teacher Todor Yonchev and other like-minded people, with the help of the Swiss teachers, built common ideological positions and goals for the guidelines in the development of physical culture in Bulgaria. It was to these pioneers that today’s holiday was dedicated, filled with many emotions and sports spirit, the celebration was opened by Assoc. Dr. Daniela Tomova, head Department of “Theory and Methodology of Physical Education” at the Faculty of “Pedagogy” with a short greeting, recalling the work of these glorious men.
