A health talk about the infection and consequences of whooping cough was organized by activists from the Roma quarter “Iztok” in Kyustendil, where two newborn babies died. In the 12,000-strong neighborhood, they want to have clarity on the problem, as well as how to protect themselves. And how to do the vaccination.

In the crowded hall of the community center in the “Iztok” quarter, Dr. Iliyana Krasteva, head of the epidemiological department at the RZI, explained the problem with the registered cases of whooping cough, of which there are four in Kyustendil, and eight in the entire region. So far, there are no newly confirmed cases.

Stefan Lazarov, long-time mayor of the “Iztok” quarter until the post was closed, and chairman of a Roma association, told BNR

“Many interested people came despite the rain. It went very well. Very good clarity. There were brochures on the way out for everyone to give to relatives, friends. I appeal to parents: Immunize your children, vaccinate them, because this is very important for the future of the children. And most importantly, in our neighborhood we have to be very careful with the hygienic conditions”.

Since the beginning of the year in the Kyustendil region, whooping cough has been registered in four of the 9 municipalities – Kyustendil, Dupnitsa, Bobov dol and Trekliano.
